Suitable seasons are usually spring, summer, and early autumn, when the weather is more stable and nature is at its most vibrant.
Eco-trail 'Vitata Stena' (Zdravkovets – Yavorets)
The eco-trail "Vitata Stena" connects the villages of Zdravkovets and Yavorets and features a circular hike on the Strazhata plateau, about 8 km in one direction. It is a moderately difficult route and is also suitable for bicycles. Along the way, expansive panoramic views open up of the peaks of Central Stara Planina. From the summit you get a panoramic view of the surroundings, and the vertical limestone cliffs are home to many bats. The descent to the village of Yavorets is also assisted by steel handrails. The trail is marked in red and white, and the starting point can be reached via an asphalt road from Gabrovo. This trail is most picturesque in late spring and summer, when the meadows are in bloom.
Eco-trail 'Iglika'
The eco-trail to the village of Iglika is a circular route (3 km in total) with a gentle ascent and takes about an hour and a half to walk. It begins at the meadow just before the village and offers pastoral views of Stara Planina and the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. Along the route, the remains of the fortress "Gradat" (Chomashkata Skala) can be seen at the summit above Iglika. The fortress is a terraced rock outcrop from which one has a wide panorama.
Above the fortress there is a paragliding launch post and a resting area, and the trail descends toward the village, passing by a fountain with a stone trough. From the center of Iglika you can also go an additional 1 km to Peak Minin Chukar for an even wider view. In the village itself you will see traditional stone houses and the community center “Nevena Kokanova.” The eco-trail is suitable for family walks, and its starting point is only 13 km from Gabrovo.
Eco-trail 'Ivanilovski Waterfall'
This trail leads to the beautiful waterfall on the Yantra River near the villages of Ivanili and Solari. The trail is short (around 2 km one way) and easy, suitable even for children. The climb is gentle, and the trail is marked in red and white. From the trailhead, you walk along a dirt road through the forest and in about 20 minutes you reach the waterfall. Its height is about 7–10 meters, and at its base a beautiful pool of water forms.
The river also forms small cascades nearby. The walk takes about an hour, including the return. This place is great for a picnic and a short rest, especially in spring and summer.
Eco-trail (Roman Road) Iztochnik – Bozhentsi
This eco-trail follows an ancient Roman road connecting the villages of Iztochnik and Bozhentsi. The route is about 3.5 km and passes through a pleasant flat forest. It is easy and requires about an hour of walking. In Bozhentsi you can visit the local architectural-historical reserve with authentic Revival architecture. The route is about 4.7 km one way and goes through a picturesque wooded area with a gentle climb to the village of Torbaladji and the Thracian sanctuary Sechen Kamak. Sechen Kamak is a long rock oriented east–west, on which more than ten stone circles – “suns” – are carved. They are hemispherical and convex, arranged in a sequence along the rock, and symbolize the connection between the earthly and celestial beginnings – the Great Mother Goddess and the sun born of her.
Along the trail there are signboards, arrows, and maps to assist hikers. After passing the sanctuary, the route enters the forest and with a gentle descent reaches the Revival-era village of Bozhentsi – an architectural-historical reserve with authentic houses and a museum. The eco-trail is of medium difficulty, suitable for both hiking and bicycle trips. It does not require special equipment and is convenient for family outings with children.
