Eco-Trails around Tryavna Worth Visiting
The town of Tryavna and its surroundings are a true haven for nature lovers and hikers. The region boasts many well-maintained Eco-Trails that offer impressive views and a chance to experience local life and history. Below are some of the most interesting routes in the Tryavna area:
Buzovets Eco-Trail (Buzovets Railway Station)
One of the most popular trails around Tryavna begins at the Buzovets railway station. From there two marked paths branch off, each with a different difficulty level. The short route (about 30 minutes) climbs along an old cart road through pine and beech forest up to Buzovets Peak. At the summit, a large shelter with a fireplace awaits, and the view spans the wide expanse of the Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains) and the foothills. Rest areas with benches and tables are set up along the way.
The longer trail (about 1.5 hours) also starts from Buzovets station. It winds through dense beech forest to the chapel of St. Sophia, Faith, Hope, and Love. From there the path leads to the Tsarski Kladenets shelter near the chapel of St. Ivan Rilski. This longer loop offers a variety of natural views and is suitable for more experienced hikers.
Tryavna – Bozhentsi Eco-Trail
The trail from Tryavna to the architectural-historical reserve of Bozhentsi is a picturesque mountain route. It starts near Tryavna’s central clock tower, and marked paths lead through the villages of Zelenika and Velchevtsi, passing by the authentic Bryshlyan Hotel. Part of the route skirts a small cave called Zmeeva Dupka (“Snake’s Hole”). The hike takes about two hours on moderately ascending terrain. Near the village of Bozhentsi, the trail ends in the little hillside village where Revival-era houses and colorful verandas create an atmosphere of the past.
Roman Road Eco-Trail (Bozhentsi – Iztochnik)
History lovers can set out along the Roman Road trail between the villages of Bozhentsi and Iztochnik, close to Tryavna. This historic route is about 3.8 km long (roughly 1 hour one way) and is easy to traverse. It passes by the remains of the Gradishte fortress and the legendary “Racho’s Well” – the site linked to the tale of Racho Kovach and the founding of Gabrovo. Along the entire route, shelters and gazebos with seating areas have been built, and informational signboards tell the story of this ancient road. This trail is suitable for family walks and curious visitors.
Dryanovo Trail (around Dryanovo Monastery)
Near the Dryanovo Monastery there is a beautiful and easy Eco-Trail with many panoramic viewpoints. The path starts at the entrance to Bacho Kiro Cave and climbs up to three terraces with benches, each at a different elevation. The route (about 30–60 minutes) offers open views of the monastery, the Dryanovska River, and the surrounding green hills. Along the trail is the famous “Love Bench” – a romantic spot favored by couples. You can often spot forest wildlife (squirrels, eagles, foxes) along the way, as well as the remains of an old fortress – a testament to the area’s rich past.
Etar – Sokolski Monastery Eco-Trail (Gabrovo)
This route begins at the Etar Ethnographic Complex near Gabrovo, but it’s also popular with visitors coming from Tryavna. The trailhead is at the main parking area of the Etar Open-Air Museum, and it is marked in green. A pleasant mountain path through a century-old forest leads for about 1.5 hours to the Sokolski Monastery (Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin). Along the way there are several rest areas with benches and tables, and the forest opens to wonderful views of the Balkan peaks. In the meadow by the monastery, a quiet, peaceful atmosphere reigns among the ancient trees.
In the Tryavna area there are many other interesting Eco-Trails suitable for family outings and everyday walks. When visiting the routes mentioned above, it is important to:
