Landmarks around Tryavna

Tryavna is a small National Revival town in the heart of Bulgaria, nestled in the picturesque valley of the Tryavna River. The area around Tryavna is rich in unique landmarks that combine architectural spirit and natural beauty, attracting many visitors. The town itself offers historical sites, museums, and other attractions that reveal the traditional Bulgarian lifestyle from the Revival period.

Landmarks in Tryavna

Chasovnikovata Kula – the Clock Tower, built in 1814, is the emblematic symbol of Tryavna and part of the architectural ensemble on Kapitan Dyado Nikola Square.


Garbaviyat most (Kivgir Bridge) – the Humpbacked Bridge, constructed in 1844–1845, impresses with its stone arches and distinctive shape.


Daskalovata Kashta – one of the main cultural landmarks of the town, home to the only Woodcarving Museum in Bulgaria.


Raykovata Kashta – a Revival-era house from 1846, now turned into a museum of traditional 19th–20th century lifestyle.


Museum of Asian and African Art – housed in an old building on the central square, it exhibits nearly 200 artifacts and sculptures from India, China, Nepal, and Africa.


Museum of the Tryavna Icon Painting School – preserves over 160 original icons and tools of the oldest icon-painting school from the Bulgarian Revival.


Landmarks around Tryavna

The town is surrounded by numerous landmarks that can be visited on day trips or along marked hiking trails. Some of the most interesting include:

Architectural Reserve Bozhentsi – a Renaissance village 6 km from Tryavna, declared an architectural reserve in 1964 for its authentic Revival architecture.


Dryanovo Monastery "Sv. Arkhangel Mihail" – founded in the 12th century, it became an important spiritual center during the Revival period.


Bacho Kiro Cave – a developed cave about 300 m from the Dryanovo Monastery, with a labyrinth of galleries.


Sokolski manastir "Uspenie Bogorodichno" – an active monastery 30 km from Tryavna (founded in 1833), famous for its fountain with eight stone falcons, the work of master builder Kolyu Ficheto.


EMO "Etara" – an open-air ethnographic museum near Gabrovo (around 25 km from Tryavna), showcasing authentic crafts and workshops.


Pametnik-muzey "Shipka" – a national park-museum 40 km from Tryavna, dedicated to the Russo-Turkish Liberation War, featuring 26 monuments (opened in 1934).


Uzana Locality – a mountain reserve about 45 km from Tryavna, known as the geographic center of Bulgaria, with pristine nature and huts.


Bulgarka Nature Park – a nature park in the Balkan Mountains near Tryavna, with ancient beech forests and rock formations.


Ekopateki – marked eco-trails such as Tryavna–Bozhentsi and Etara–Sokolski Monastery, offering scenic walks through forests and meadows.


"Zmeeva dupka" Cave – a legendary cave about 1.4 km from Tryavna’s center, associated with dragon legends. Although its entrance is closed, the site remains an intriguing stop for visitors.
